Compress Video to 10MB

10MB is one of the most common upload caps on the web — Discord's default file-share limit, basic web forms, and many application portals all sit right around there. Instead of guessing at a quality preset, set an exact 10MB target and let the compressor calculate the bitrate needed to hit it precisely.

Why target an exact file size?

Quality presets (Basic/Strong/Superb) aim for a visual-quality level — the resulting size varies with your video's length and resolution. Target-size mode works backwards from a number you give it, calculating the bitrate needed to land at or under 10MB regardless of how long your clip is. That's the difference that matters when a form or app enforces a hard cap rather than caring about quality.

Recommended settings

What we'd pick for this job. After choosing a file, resolution sits right under the compression settings, crop is under “Resize / crop”, and codec is under “Advanced settings”.

Mode

Target size · 10 MB

Pre-filled — the bitrate is calculated for your clip's length.

Codec

H.265

Fits more quality into 10 MB; use H.264 if the destination can't play HEVC.

Resolution

480p or 720p

At 10 MB, fewer pixels means a sharper picture. Try 480p for anything over ~30 seconds.

Crop

Original

Cropping reduces pixels but also loses picture.

Source

A clip trimmed to under ~30 sec

Short clips look far better at 10 MB.

How much video fits in 10MB?

Approximate length at typical streaming bitrates, with 128kbps audio. Target-size mode works out the exact bitrate for your clip automatically — this just shows what to expect.

Tips for the best result

1

Short clips look best at 10MB

10MB holds only about 15 seconds of 1080p. For anything longer, choose 720p or 480p under Resolution so each frame gets enough data to stay clean.

2

Trim before you compress

Every second you cut is size saved at full quality. Removing a slow intro or a long ending is usually worth more than an extra compression step.

3

Try a more efficient codec

H.265 or VP9 can fit noticeably more quality into the same 10MB than H.264 — just check the destination can play them.

4

Start from the original file

Compression is lossy, so re-compressing a video that has already been shrunk (or sent through a chat app) stacks artifacts. Always work from the camera or editor export.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a safe default for a lot of infrastructure — Discord's non-boosted servers cap file uploads at 10MB, and many web forms and application portals use a similar ceiling to keep server load and storage costs predictable.

It depends on length and resolution — a short clip can hit 10MB with fairly high quality, while a multi-minute video needs more aggressive compression to fit, and detail will suffer more. Trimming to just the essential part first usually gives a noticeably better result than compressing the whole thing.

Quality presets target a visual-quality level and let the file size land wherever it lands. This targets an exact byte count instead — useful when a hard limit, not visual quality, is what actually matters.

Extremely long or high-resolution source files may need to be shortened before compressing — there's a floor below which further compression just produces an unwatchable result rather than a smaller file.

For files under 200MB, compression happens entirely in your browser — your video never leaves your device. Larger files are processed on our server and deleted automatically after a short period.
